Farm & Product Updates
We have lots of updates for you this week so here goes:
Apples- We are really excited with our apple supply this year from our orchard. We are currently experimenting with apple cider, apple cider vinegar, etc. Once we finalize these items we will announce the products we have ready. These products will be all natural and will have no preservatives and will not be pasteurized. Apple cider sold from larger operations is usually pasteurized to preserve shelf life. However we want to preserve the nutrients and integrity of the product so it will be all-natural.
Bread- We are excited to share that Joe Pierce from the Mosswood Farm Store and Bakehouse based in Micanopy, FL will be visiting our farm next weekend to help us to begin to construct an outdoor kitchen/patio. As a special treat, he will be bringing with him home baked breads to share with our customers. Phase 2 of this project will be for him to help us build an outdoor wood-fired brick oven so we wanted him to bring some of the breads he bakes so that we can share these with our customers so you can get a feel for what is to come in the near future at our farm. We have added each of the bread options as separate products to our website. These items will be available on the 8/17 delivery however we wanted to highlight them now. He has the following flavors available: Classic Sourdough, Rosemary Sourdough, Tuscan Herb, Cranberry Walnut & Cinnamon Raisin. He is only bringing 10 of each flavor so be sure to secure them quickly (starting tomorrow when the new order window opens).
Cheese- As you may have noticed we have a reduced inventory for cheeses but we want to ensure we finish out our existing inventory before we replenish it so we are having a sale on our Monterey Jack cheese (block or cut). Our goal is to have more cheese (and butter) in stock by the end of the month.
Chickens- As we mentioned last week, we have a reduced number of chickens on our farm due to predators but Fogwell Family Farm has done a great job of helping us to maintain our egg numbers for customers.
Cows- We have 2 cows going to the butcher on Wednesday. We have 1 quarter cow option still available if you are interested; let us know right away. Also, once the beef is ready to pickup we will have more beef options back in stock for you.
Pigs- We took our first two pigs to the butcher yesterday and are very excited to start building back up our pork inventory. This year we are using McLamb's Abbatoir & Meats Inc. which is located in Benson, NC. They are very easy to work with and guarantee that we will get our meat back, it will not be mixed with any other customers meats and we will get exactly what we asked for. These are very important items for us as you know we raise our pigs very differently than conventional hogs so the last thing we want is to spend all this time and effort raising our pigs cleanly and then get someone else's meat back. We want to ensure that our customers are fully satisfied with our end product and that is why it's so important to us to select the right partners to handle our animals. If you are ready to place your half or whole pig order just let us know and we can send you a cut sheet. On a side note, we double check our inventory on Tuesday mornings for milk, yogurt, kefir, eggs, etc. and sometimes if we determine we will have extra we add more inventory to the site. So if you miss out on something you wanted you can check back when we send out the newsletter to see if there have been additions made to the site. For example for this week, we will have more eggs, yogurt and kefir than expected.
That's all for this time; we hope you have a great August and we will talk to you again in a few weeks!
